" Here is my historiical reference to the ancient city of Ruvo that I promised you. Perhaps this is my last literary production. The weight of the years aggravated more by the strong and continuous health problems that I am suffering, to great difficulty could afford to meet this debt that had our common home. The address to you to inflame your tender heart still of the holy love of it. Read it and reread it carefully. See if I've always loved her and love her, and love her in the same way. I was the first one who tried to rip off that bujo that kept his remus rage, and illustrious origin. I flatter myself that I have done it not without a success that fills my heart with joy, and largely compensates for the light labor that has cost me this. " This is the premise of the work entitled "Historical Background on the ancient city of Ruvo in Peucizia" written by the magistrate and archaeologist Giovanni Jatta in 1844, I dedicate much of his life to the defense of the history and antiquities of Ruvo di Puglia and of all the territory that we are going to discover with this trip. His work is dedicated to the origins and the most prosperous period of the city of Ruvo, a very active center for artistic activity among the colonies of Magna Graecia. Our itinerary will start from this thriving town, which extends on a low promontory not far from the Adriatic coast, and that has seen the presence of human settlements since the remotest times, being the seat of one of the most important indigenous centers of the Peucezia.

We will then walk, always strictly on foot, a part of the Alta Murgia National Park, through ancient tratturi and little dirt roads, intercepting for a short distance the almost centenary route of the Apulian Aqueduct. We will visit ancient necropolises from the Bronze Age, but also important and ancient Masserie, now homes of 100% eco-sustainable farms, which will revive the wayfarer the centuries-old agropastoral culture typical of the Alta Murgia Park. There will also be visits to the archaeological areas until you get to the most important monument of all the Park, that is Castel del Monte, Unesco Heritage and Good of Humanity, which does not need any kind of presentation.   < / div>

For this journey on foot, we ask you to first provide:

• EYES WELL OPEN to be able to spot the many animal species that inhabit the park. The birdlife is especially rich, including birds of prey. The falcon grillaio hunts in the natural pastures and nests in the historical centers of many of the Park's municipalities. Easy to spot Poiana, Red Kite, Biancone in the right season, while among the small birds there are a myriad of Alaudids, which nest on the ground and sing while they rise in the sky (Calandra, Calandrella, Tottavilla, Calandro, Lark). Amphibians (such as the Italian newt, the green toad, the yellow-bellied toad) are collected in seasonal cisterns and ponds, while reptiles (such as the kotschyi gecko, the lizard, the cervon, the coluber, the viper, and the Hermann's tortoise) exploit sunny environments. Among the mammals it is easy to meet the fox, the weasel, the marten, the badger and sporadically there is also the wolf (do not worry the wolf is good!);

• SENSITIVITY to be able to capture the soul of the Park and its Genius Loci, because as said Servius, Roman commentator of the fourth century .: « nullus locus sine Genio » (no place is without a Genius), and the Park, we can guarantee you, it has more than one, which will only manifest itself to the most gifted travelers of this quality

• FANTASY AND IMAGINATION to impress in the soul, forever, the incredible photographs on the Park, which will give you many subjects in a large open space, where you can wander with your gaze towards infinite horizons;

• A POINT OF SILENCE to prepare yourself for a listening situation, trying to perceive the invisible behind the visible of the Park, and to get in touch with the essence of that small fragment of Earth on which we are called to walk. This endowment will allow all three points listed above to be successful.

Day 1 – Ruvo di Puglia: urban trekking in the splendid historical center of the ancient village of Ruvo di Puglia, city of the oil and city of art, famous for its production of artistic ceramics. Description: we will meet again at 16:00 at the magnificent Cathedral of the city, and dedicate the afternoon to visit the most important monuments of Ruvo: the Cathedral, the cave of San Cleto, and the famous Museo Jatta, which is the only example in Italy of a nineteenth-century private collection still unchanged from the original museographic conception.
The trip will then begin with a soft walk and will see us engaged in an urban trekking of only 4 km.
Overnight in B &b Casa Dolce Casa in Ruvo, free dinner.

Day   2   – Torre dei Guardiani / Murgia di Coppa: trekking in the heart of the Alta Murgia National Park, precisely in the district "Ferrata Jazzo Rosso".
Description: departure and meeting at 8:30 from Piazza Bovio, in front of the entrance to the Museo Jatta in Ruvo di Puglia. We will move on foot to the famous local "Mezzapagnotta", where we will pick up our lunch bag (in this place the wild herbs of the Alta Murgia become delicacies, and in a loaf you will find the taste of the most authentic Puglia!). From here a short passage by bus to the Torre Dei Guardiani, from where the trek begins. The Torre dei Guardiani is a structure owned by the Municipality of Ruvo di Puglia, and has been granted free loan to the Park Authority, which has carried out its restoration and recovery. The building dates back to the late 1800s and was used as barracks and lodging for rural guards. From here we will start walking towards the Coppa Agriturismo. The farm takes its name from the Coppa family, which in 1735 had it built, also having a small chapel erected. In the first decades of 1800 the property passed to the brothers Giovanni and Filippo Jatta of Ruvo di Puglia who turned it into a manor house.
The route will involve us for about seven hours of walking, covering an itinerary of about 16 km.
Dinner and overnight at Agriturismo Coppa.

Day   3   – Murgia di Coppa / San Magno / Agriturismo Pedale: trekking in the splendid countryside of the centuries-old Murgia foothills Coratina.
Description: departure at 8:30 am from the Agriturismo, and a moment of farewell with the managers, who will deliver a sack lunch to refresh ourselves during the walk. During the trekking we will stop to visit the necropolis of San Magno. The necropolis extends for hundreds of meters, and presents in the middle a predominantly rectangular and very wide cist, surrounded by blocks and slabs; or less megalithic so as to seem, if not authentically dolmensic, of dolmenic type and clearly connected to the cist of the recalled dolmensian burial mound of the late Bronze Age. From here we will continue towards the splendid Masseria Pedale, an ancient fortification dating back to 1600, completely immersed in the green of ancient oaks, olive groves, vineyards and orchards.
The route will see us busy for about seven hours walking, covering an itinerary of about 17 km.
Dinner and overnight at Agriturismo Masseria Pedale.

Day   4   (half day) – Farmhouse Masseria Pedale / Castel Del Monte: trekking among vineyards and endless fields of wheat until you reach Castel Del Monte, World Heritage Site, UNESCO Protected Heritage.
Description: departure at 8:30 am from the Agriturismo Masseria Pedale, where also here, during the farewell with the managers, we will deliver a packed lunch.   / div>
We will let ourselves go to the scents and colors of the beautiful nature of the Alta Murgia Park, and after about 10 kilometers we will reach the slopes of the hill that houses the incredible Castel Del Monte.
Built around 1240, Castel del Monte was the permanent seat of the court of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, who became only a sovereign of the Kingdom of Sicily. A masterpiece of inestimable value in the history of Italy, Castel del Monte fully deserves the title of "World Heritage Site": a place to live in its thousand enigmas and to visit at least once in your life.
Arrival at the Castle is scheduled for 3:30 pm. Our journey will end here and we will leave the travelers free to visit and enjoy, according to their own times, the incredible monument.
