From Passignano, departure for a boat trip to Isola Maggiore. In the afternoon, continuation toward Perugia. The capital of Umbria is an ancient city and at the same time extremely lively, with two universities, an art academy, numerous museums, and galleries. What is most fascinating is the intact historic urban landscape, characterized by Etruscan gates, medieval churches, Renaissance buildings, and winding streets.
Assisi – Gubbio – Half board at the hotel. Departure for Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis. Visit to the Franciscan basilica and the three great squares: Piazza del Comune, Piazza San Rufino, and Piazza Santa Chiara. The Basilica of Saint Francis is the most richly decorated church in the city. Some of the most important Italian artists worked here in honor of the saint for nearly 200 years. Famous is Giotto’s fresco cycle “The Life of Francis” in the upper church. Continuation toward Gubbio, one of the best-preserved medieval city-states.
Todi – Spoleto – Half board at the hotel. Departure for Todi, a magnificent example of a medieval city surrounded by three concentric walls that testify to the city’s expansion through different historical periods. Before entering the historic city center, you encounter the imposing church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, one of the most remarkable works of the Renaissance in Umbria. Its construction began in 1508 based on a design attributed to Bramante and was completed in 1617 with the contribution of famous architects of the era. In the city center is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, the splendid Piazza del Popolo. Continuation toward Spoleto and historical walk among Baroque churches and magnificent Renaissance frescoes. The symbol of the city is the “Ponte delle Torri,” an imposing medieval aqueduct. Stop with a wine tasting and a light snack.
Orvieto – Civita di Bagnoregio – Half board at the hotel. Visit to the ancient Etruscan city of Orvieto, which sits atop a tuff cliff. City tour with its medieval towers and palaces. Not to be missed: the Cathedral, Palazzo del Popolo, Palazzo Soliano, and Saint Patrick’s Well. Continuation toward Civita di Bagnoregio, “a dying town,” situated on the summit of a hill that is slowly breaking away. Today only the central core of the village remains, accessible only via a bridge.
